Red Summer, - and the entire camp gets seriously decked out in costumes and colors for their teams. Here is where your camper’s artistic side truly comes out! Each team is usually given a theme that goes along with their color - Blue Hawaii vs. Usually, camps have breakout in the last couple weeks of camp and Color War marks the beginning of the end: it’s sad but exciting and thrilling and is truly the pinnacle of the summer! It’s always a surprise, there are always fake-outs, and it’s always the beginning of the best days of camp. It’s a huge event that involves the entire camp - you can feel the excitement buzzing in the air as break out gets closer, and campers are always guessing what day, time, hour, and minute it will finally break. This is what your child has been waiting for during the 10 months of the year. Every camp does color war in their own unique way, so in honor of this momentous occasion, and in celebration of our own COLOR WAR RIDE AT SOULCYCLE last night, here is the 411 on summer’s most hyped-up event!!!

During Color War, campers compete on different teams in activities all around camp – from basketball to boating to braiding, anything goes! And at the end, when Sing Night rolls around, there are more tears or laughs than on any other night of camp and everyone comes together as one, no matter if they win or lose. To change the difficulty level and the game, you can add more colours and/or allow the students to throw the balls in order to tag others.Lights are flashing, fans are cheering, team colors are seen all around… it’s Color War time!!! Basically the World Cup / the Super Bowl of the camp season, Color War is the cherry on top of the most amazing summer. After each game, have the students throw their balls as far away as they can, and tell them that they now have 5 seconds to pick up a new ball (which may or may not be a different colour). The game ends when one team has been completely eliminated or when there is no one left to chase/catch.

The teacher has the “Immortal Ball” (a dodgeball of a different colour than the other 3), and can save ANYONE and be tagged by NO ONE!.The only way you can be saved is if someone from your colour taps their ball to your ball. If you get tagged by the colour chasing you, you must sit down and hold your ball straight up in the air.Because grass (green balls) has no one left to chase, it has to chase the sun (yellow balls). Because the sky is higher than the grass, the sky (blue balls) chase the grass (green balls). Using the colours outlined above, I tell the students that because the sun is the highest, the sun (yellow balls), chase the sky (blue balls). In this game, each colour can tag one other colour, and each colour can BE TAGGED by one other colour. For us, we use yellow, blue and green where yellow = sun, blue = sky and green = grass. Balls can be any 3 colours you choose, but I find it works best if you can create a story connection between the 3 colours.

  • Split the students into 3 even teams and distribute the 3 coloured balls (one for each student).
  • 1 other dodgeball that is a different colour from the 3 colours above.
  • 3 different colours of dodgeballs for 3 even teams (enough so that each student has a dodgeball).
